If there is a slang word in the Afrikaans language that brings a smile to anyone hearing it, it is the word, vasbyt.
No one knows where it originated, but it was widely used by all conscripts to the South African Defense Force. Because all South Africans (including Dr. Fred) served for two years, it became a word depicting the determination and perseverance you need to get through a tough time, such as boot camp, or a forced march over a long distance. You could just utter the single word, “vasbyt”, and everyone knew what you meant. Persevere until Victorious!
